Container House Product Selection Update: Electronic Door Locks

I am one of those people that is constantly misplacing my keys and so the idea of an electronic deadbolt with a programable access code is really appealing. This way I can keep spare keys in the house and still have access via the keypad. While I like this electronic convenience I am also skeptical of electronic only solutions and appreciate that this door can still be opened with an old fashioned key should the battery ever run out. Here are some things to consider when selecting an electronic deadbolt:

1. Check the number of holes in your door.

Most doors come with the holes for the deadbolt and doorknob already drilled in them. Some doors just have a single hole for the doorknob while others have two holes: one for the knob and one for the deadbolt. Schlage makes electronic deadbolts for both situations.

Two holes:

2. Electronic vs. Smart.

Some electronic doors have wifi and bluetooth capabilities that allow you to create digital keys that allow you to open the door with a phone. This is great for airbnb hosts but adds additional set up complication and often requires downloading smart phone applications. I like that these Schlage products are simple and straightforward and don’t require me to set up log in accounts to an app.

3. Know the battery life and set a reminder.

These locks use a 9-volt battery that will last about 3 years. Set a reminder so that you can switch the batteries without them running out.

Thanks for reading this product selection update. Stay tuned for the videos documenting the full container house build. In the meantime here is a post that has more information about the house and the products.
