2017 Half Year Update!

I can’t believe we are already halfway through 2017. It has been an epic year so far and I thought I would share some of the highlights as well as some moments that didn’t make it into project videos.

This post is sponsored by Acura, who has been awesome to work with. They hooked me up with a 2017 Acura MDX, which has proven to be a wonderful mix of luxury and utility. I have loaded it up with giant slabs of blue stone, steel beams and lumber for DIY projects, but have also cruised on 14-hour road trips in comfort and with style. Anyone that knows me knows that I hate parallel parking, but the dashboard display and composite imaging make it easy because you get a bird’s-eye view of everything around the car.

My favorite projects!

Here are my 3 favorite projects for the first half of 2017!

Plywood Table
This project represents exactly what I want to accomplish with HomeMade Modern. It cost less than $45 to build. It is strong and durable yet only requires a circular saw and drill. In the future I want to team up with artists and have them paint on the plywood before I cut it. If anyone wants to create a CNC version of this table I would love to see it and would be happy to help.

Steel Table
This was the first of a series of sponsored posts we did for Acura. They have been an awesome sponsor and having a larger car let me explore different parts of the country and take on larger projects. This steel beam was a heavy challenge but I really enjoyed carving it up.

Plywood Sofa
I gave away the ZigZag sofa to a friend who didn’t need the cushions so I re-used them for this DIY Plywood Sofa. It is super sturdy and I love the long low modern look of it.

Road Trip
My friends over at Acura challenged me to get out of the workshop and go on a series of road trips to explore new places and experiment with new materials. This was a lot of fun and I feel like I collected a bunch of new ideas in these last few months.

Should I go in or just send in the drone? I just finished the first road trip that @acura sent me on and am going over all the content now. This house was just outside of Gaffney SC about 2 miles from the giant 🍑. I have always wanted to buy a place like this and make it livable while preserving part of the ruin aesthetic. Drone video coming soon!

Road trip post! On my way back from an event in Atlanta I parked the @ACURA MDX off of a side road in New Jersey to stretch my legs. A short walk through the trees gave me a few bug bites and a ton of ideas for a decentralized chandelier that is more like a forest than it is like a single object. This small wooded area is about 100 feet from a parking lot yet feels like a completely different world. #AcuraPartner #MDX #ad

New Hampshire
I had a few trips around New Hampshire. The first was to visit a friend who owns a private forest. I harvested some logs to make a Swedish torch and also got to play with some of their animals.

Road Trip! I have always wanted to make a "Swedish torch" so i used my Ryobi 40-volt chainsaw to cut up some fallen logs on my friends land in New Hampshire. I will need to let the wood dry out a bit though before making the torches. I had fun taking the @ACURA MDX on some dirt roads through the woods. Its always nice to take a ridiculously loaded luxury SUV to cut and haul wet logs! #lumberjack #chainsaw #homemademodern #ryobination #swedishtorch #log #AcuraPartner #MDX and #ad

Road trip! One of the first places I took the @ACURA MDX was up to my friends property in New Hampshire. It has been a long winter in New England and it was so nice to go on a nice 2-hour drive and get some long overdue sun through the sunroof. Ostensibly, it was a work trip to pick up some pine logs but it was nice to mingle with the animals. The little fat donkeys where my favorite! #AcuraPartner #MDX

The full Video for this DIY Swedish Torch and Camp Stove is now live on my YouTube Channel. I took the @ACURA MDX out to New Hampshire to harvest the logs. The camp stove was made out of an old dull circular saw blade. #AcuraPartner #MDX

The 2nd New Hampshire trip was to pick up a Victorian style wardrobe. I stopped off and checked out an old steel bridge along the way.

South Carolina
My sister Jessie and I had explored this brick ruin in South Carolina on a pervious trip. This time I just pulled the Acura MDX over and launched the drone to explore it from the air.

Road Trip Post! i think I found my dream property in South Carolina. I am taking location scouting to the next level using this @ACURA MDX and a phantom 4 pro drone. @ijessup and I had visited this site before but this time I was able to see it from the air. #AcuraPartner #MDX

Western Massachusetts I am currently looking for a space for a new workshop so I took the Acura MDX around western Massachusetts to look at old brick warehouses and some old churches that are for sale.

Road Trip! The workshop hunt continues. This time I took the @ACURA MDX to the second most populous city in Massachusetts to check out an old abandoned church. The drone came in handy for checking out the condition of the roof, which seems be sagging a bit at the intersection of the gables. I think I will pass on this space since it is smaller but more expensive than the other ones I looked at. #AcuraPartner #MDX

Road Trip! The search for a new workshop continues. This time I drove the @ACURA MDX out to Western Massachusetts to look at some old brick warehouses. They are a bit beat up but are next to a nice river and not too far from Boston. I got some nice footage of them with my DJI Phantom 4 pro drone. If you know of a good place for my next workshop let me know in the comment section below. #AcuraPartner #MDX

Tattoo
I got a tattoo! I have been planning on turning my arm into a measuring device for years and I finally got it done. Evan Kim spent 6 hours working on my arm and it was really interesting to learn about his process.

@benjaminuyeda showing off his new tattoo by @evantattoo We just recorded and MMP episode where ben explains how there is more to making a tattoo than just drawing in skin
